Refugee protection

The following sections contain information on the most important international treaties and agreements of which Jamaica is signatory, as well as national legislation relevant to the protection of refugees.

Jamaica is a State party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol. The country has also acceded to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, but is not yet a party to the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons.

The Government of Jamaica adopted the National Refugee Policy in 2009. This policy reiterates Jamaica’s obligations under the 1951 Convention and sets the procedures for managing the refugee status determination process in the country.
